Private Lesson FAQ
Private lessons are an excellent opportunity to get specialized, one-on-one instruction with our Chess-U-See qualified staff. Private lessons include an initial assessment where the instructor will determine the player's strengths and weaknesses, and then custom tailor a lesson plan to suit the player's needs.

What is Chess-U-See Academy?
We're an online chess tutoring service that offers private, one-on-one lessons to players of all levels, from the chess hobbyist to the competitive player. Our experienced chess tutors use advanced teaching methods and cutting-edge technology to provide personalized instruction and feedback in real-time. Our lessons are conducted live and online, using online video platforms like Google Meets and Zoom along with a virtual chess board, so you can learn from the comfort of your own home or anywhere with an internet connection.
What are private lessons?
Private Lessons are 1-on-1 lessons with our experienced staff of instructors. Instructors will cover everything from the rules of the game to more advanced chess strategy.
How do private lessons work?
We do lessons over Google Meets, Zoom and Chess.com Classroom and use an interactive online chess board like this one. No physical chess board is needed!
When do you offer private lessons?
We offer lessons 6 days a week (Mon-Sat), from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (Pacific Time, USA). Additional lessons may be offered at other times depending on the schedules of our instructors. You can select your preferred time-slots when you sign-up and see when our instructors are available. Perfect for busy people!
How do I schedule a private lesson?
You can schedule a private lesson directly through our website by selecting an instructor on our Chess Tutors Page and scheduling a time for your lesson.
How frequently can I do lessons?
You can select from 1-3x/week. If you're starting out, we recommend 1-2x/week, but if you have more competitive or serious goals, then you can choose to do lessons 3x/week.
What do lessons cost?
We offer a number of programs catering to various budget levels. Our starting rate for lessons is $12 USD per session, but depending on your budget, needs, and goals, the fee per session can be higher. By booking lessons in bulk you can save up to $50 on your order. We also periodically offer discount codes or special offers for additional savings!
Does Chess-U-See Academy offer in-person private lessons?
Due to the fact that we have an international audience we are unable to offer in-person lessons at this time.
How do online lessons work?
After scheduling through the website, your instructor will send you an email with a Google Meet or Chess.com Classroom link for your lesson. Your instructor will join you at the meeting link and teach using screen-shares and online chess boards. If you would like to talk to the instructor before your lesson, please contact them directly using the email listed on their profile.
How long are private lessons?
We offer 30 and 60 minute lessons.
Is this suitable for adults?
We work with students of all levels, backgrounds, and ages. From the complete beginner to the seasoned tournament competitor, whether you're 6 years old or 60 years old, whether you want to learn chess for fun or whether you plan to dominate the chess world, we can work with you! We offer a number of excellent programs catering to different student profiles.
Is there an alternative to private lessons to learn how to play chess?
Yes! We offer select free downloadable PDF lessons from our Chess-U-See Academy Program to give you a taste of our lesson style. We also offer our eBook, 101 Chess Tactics from Amateur Games (Amazon eBook) for those looking to study custom curated puzzles at their own pace.
For those who prefer video instruction we currently have hundreds of free videos available on our YouTube channel, Chess-U-See.
As of July 2024, we have published our Chess Fundamentals video course which is available for free here on shopchessusee.com. This course will provide you a strong foundation that will help you win at chess in just a matter of days! This course is produced by Chess-U-See founder, Bryce Gallo.
We also are in the process of producing a brand new course, Climbing the Stairs, a comprehensive online course featuring the games of chess grandmasters with detailed analysis and instruction by our Chess-U-See coach, Andy Ram.
How soon can I schedule a lesson?
Lessons can be scheduled as early as 48 hours in advance.
I’m no longer available for my scheduled lesson. What should I do?
To reschedule or cancel a lesson, please contact your instructor directly using their email address listed on their profile page.
Can I cancel my lesson and receive a refund?
Lessons must be cancelled at least 48 hours in advance to receive a refund.
Is it possible to schedule one lesson with multiple students?
Please reach out to your instructor directly using their email address listed on their profile. They will be able to assist in scheduling a lesson with multiple students.
What is the difference between a "Native" English speaking instructor and a "Fluent" English speaking instructor?
An instructor with a language listed as "Native" means that the instructor speaks this language as their first learned language. A "Fluent" language on the other hand means that the instructor excels at a second-learned (or foreign) language.
